An interesting article in World Climate Report discusses some ways in which the effect of various changes in CO2 can be translated into estimated temperature changes.

What is interesting is that all of the control measures discussed suggest that drastic reductins in CO2 are necessary to prevent warming but don't ever discuss how effective these control will be in reducing warming.

So, based on an anslysis which takes the models and claims of the global warming believers at face value, it turns out that 14,138 millions tons of CO2 are necessary to increase the global concentration of CO2 by 1 ppm and 125 ppm of CO2 increase is necessary to warm the earth by 1 degree Celsius. Remember, these figures assume the global warming believers are correct. So, a total of 1,767,250 million tons of CO2 would lead to a full degree increase (125 times 14,138).

Henry Waxman wants to reduce US CO2 emissions by 20% by 2020 and 83% by 2050. The initial cost of the cap and trade program is estimated to be about $3000 per year per family or $360 billion per year assuming 125 million (roughly) families. Now it is likely that the actual costs will be quite a bit higher than this -- when gasoline went to $4.00 per gallon, demand went down by 2% or so. And, at the time, now Energy Secretary Steven Chu said he hoped that U.S. gasoline prices would reach levels that were in Europe at that time or roughly $8 per gallon.

So $8 per gallon of gasoline and "skrocketing" electricity prices (per Barack Obama) are in our future.

Now, what does that get us. Well, U.S. CO2 emissions in 2005 were 6,000 million tons and the 20% reduction by 2020 would amount to 1,200 millions tons. And putting us on that path would start out costing $360 billion per year but that figure would likely increase.

But the 1,200 million ton reducion would only reduce temperature by 0.000679021 degrees Celsius (1,200 divided by 1,767,250).

So, how much would it cost to reduce temperatures by 1 degree. Well, if it cost $360 billion to reduce 0.000679021 degrees, a whole degree would cost an incredible $530,175 billion dollars. And for those who are Slow in math, that is over $530 trillion dollars.

But even the 83 percent reduction planned by Waxman for 2050 won't come close to a degree of cooling by a long shot. The 83% reduction would amount to 4,980 million tons and result in a reduction in warming of 0.002817937 degree. If costs remain the same as the start of the program (and what government program has even gone according to original plan), the cost in 2050 would be $1.494 trillion dollars.
