John Travolta's son died the other day, evidently due to hitting his head in the bathroom after having a seizure. There is some indication that the seizures could have been controlled by medication but are banned by Scientology, Travolta's religion.
Apparently, the OSB has deleted and particularly critical comments from their Ocala.com headlines section although they have left some that I have posted. We'll see if they last into the work week.
I did start a thread there under Faith and Values.
Here is an article from the New York Post indicating how the death of Jett Travolta could have been prevented with normal medical treatment.
Evidently the Travoltas denied that their son had autism becuase autism (and a number of other conditions) simply do not exist in Scientology. Instead, those symptoms are considered to be caused by infestations of dead space aliens that need to be removed by Scientology auditing and similar ineffective procedures.
Quote:
According to the Church of Scientology, people with disabilities like autism are classified as "degraded" and capable of curing themselves by working harder on the church's teachings.
...
"I believe this is something that was totally avoidable," said the autism activist, who asked not to be identified by name because she says she has a friendship with Travolta's brother, Joey.
"There were such clear indications that this kid had autism," she said. "It's bothered me for years.
"The irony is not lost that Joey has committed his life to working with autism and disabilities, and his brother, for religious reasons, would let this happen.
"Joey tries to be as supportive of his brother's choices as he can be, but this has really upset me."
The Travoltas claimed that their son has Kawasaki syndrome.
Quote:
Jett's parents claimed to have treated his Kawasaki symptoms with a Scientology-prescribed course of "detoxification" - a regimen of diet and saunas that the church claims is purifying, but which Kawasaki specialist Dr. Adrianna Tremoulet has never heard of.
It is hard to imagine a middle or lower class family neglecting critical medical treatment leading to the death of a 16-year old and not being investigated for child neglect or abuse.
And here is a different take on things indicating that the Travoltas had administered Depakote to their son, apparently in contravention of Scientology dictates.
Well, this is a different wrinkle for sure. And any middle or lower class Scientoloty parents giving a child anti-seizure medication would be removed from Scientology and labeled as Supressive Persons.
