At the behest of the Vatican, Italian prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, is attempting to intervene in the right-to-death case of Eluana Englaro who has been in a persistent vegetative state since 1992.
Quote:
Justifying his campaign to save Englaro's life, the prime minister added that, physically at least, she was "in the condition to have babies", a remark described by La Stampa newspaper as "shocking".
So far, no one seems to be paying attention to the would-be dictator's rantings.
This case bears an eerie resemblance to the case of Terri Schiavo in which then Governor Jeb Bush attempted to exercise dictatorial powers in Florida. Evidently Bush took his actions without being directly ordered to by the Vatican and he at least did not justify his improper actions by claiming that Schiavo was in good enough condition to have children. There was some indication that Bush was thinking about mobilizing FDLE officers to kidnap Schiavo but he evidently thought better of that.
