A small 800 foot completely solar home was built in Troy Michigan at a cost of $900,000. This cost, over $1,000 per square foot, is about 10 times what the cost of conventional construction is.

And the expensive house was supposed to be put on display but it has yet to open to the public.

So, what caused the high priced solar home to FAIL? Apparently a heater designed to keep pipes from freezing drew out all of the charge from the solar system during Michigan's very cold winter and, although the story doesn't explicitly say so, it is like that the pipes burst when they thawed.

Source.

Perhaps the folks who designed the house were Al Gore believers and figured it wouldn't get cold again in Michigan.
